Shipment from England for prisoners of war
Description
Parcel label for a delivery of bread, addressed to Indian prisoners of war at Halbmondlager, Zossen.
Context
According to international law, prisoners of war were to receive the same amount of calories per day as the soldiers of the country in which they were held captive.Throughout the war, the supply situation worsened both in German camps, as well as at the front. British and French aid organisations supplied their compatriots with subsistence. British 'standard parcels of food' contained tins of meat, fish, and vegetables, as well as rice, cheese, tea, chocolate, biscuits, cigarettes, and soap. They were distributed via neutral countries such as Switzerland.
