A catalogue listing those books available in the Netherlands in 1916 and books published in 1916-17, with an introduction by D. Smit about the Dutch book market during the first years of the war.

The literary survey by D. Smit (librarian from the Reading Museum in Amsterdam), in cooperation with the Association of Dutch publishers (Nederlandsche Uitgeversbond), presents the situation regarding books in the war years. According to Smit, during the war the book enjoyed an extremely high status in the Netherlands. The belligerent empires, which at the start of war had begun to gain the sympathies of Dutch readers through propaganda, had therefore wagered well in realising that books would prove to be a useful medium by which to influence public opinion.
