The Film World
Description
A Dutch film magazine, established by Belgian refugees but taken over and financed by the German embassy in the summer of 1918.
Context
The takeover of De Film wereld was a typical manoeuvre in Germany's propaganda strategy. The magazine, initially advertising Entente films, was taken over by the Germans on the suggestion of its Dutch publisher, Sijthoff, known for his pro-German sympathies (Eversdijk 2010: 327). The advertising of German films in this popular magazine resulted in better sales of German features and an increase in the popularity of emerging German film stars.
