The Legend of Saint Barbara

la leggenda.jpg

An Italian propaganda film depicting the Germans as vandals trying to destroy ancient Roman civilisation and whose women were ready to fight for freedom to the bitter end.

This film is a good example of anti-German propaganda: using historical and religious settings to depict German barbarism; and presenting an urge to protect the 'civilised' world. The copy, with Dutch subtitles was supposedly screened in the Netherlands during the war. Athough the film was clearly propagandistic in nature, it could have been screened in a neutral country, since it told a mythical and ancient story. The title role was played by Lyda Borelli, an Italian diva, who was very popular with Dutch audiences.
