German film propaganda
German advertisement for Messter-Film GmbH, which was part of the government-sponsored Ufa concern. The advertisement was published in the Dutch film magazine De Bioscoop in early 1918.
This advertisement illustrates well Germany's strategies for influencing neutral audiences. Among the wide range of titles offered by Messter GmbH, official newsreels or war documentaries seemed to play a marginal role. Instead, serials, dramas, and comedies were far more important in establishing a positive image of German culture in the Netherlands, for they appealed to the shared 'Germanic' roots of both countries.
