Photo album by British soldier stationed in Egypt
John Brown's personal photograph album, including photographs of Naga Hills tribesmen in traditional dress on the deck of HMS Kingstonian in the Mediterranean, en route from India to France (May 1917).
These photographs depict an encounter between British soldiers and Naga men from the remote north-eastern part of India. While on their journey to serve in the war in Europe, the Naga men passed through Egypt, the most important transport hub for troops from all parts of the British Empire.
While the majority of photographs show the Naga in exotic poses or performing dances, others hint at personal interactions between the men, whose lives intermingled for a short moment in the midst of war.
