The Great French Advancement at the Somme
French propaganda film which was screened in the Netherlands and in the Dutch East Indies. Film clipping and newspaper adverts from colonial newspapers: http://www.cnc-aff.fr/internet_cnc/Internet/ARemplir/parcours/EFG1914/pages_FR/B_117.html
The screening of the French film that told the story of the Battle of the Somme was not as great a success as the British film, nevertheless it was very popular in the Dutch Kingdom. In the Netherlands, it preceded the release of the British film, coming out in September 1916. In the Indies, the French Somme film was released in cinemas about two weeks after the British one in April 1917. We see from British Foreign Office documents that, as well as attempting to rival German film propaganda, the British and French were also embattled among themselves.
